Location
This was taken at Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.Time
This was early morning, probably 6 or 7 am. We'd camped in the car just up the road, and the temperature had dropped to around 0 degrees celsius overnight, so we had to wait for the ice to thaw from the windows before we could get moving and head to the mountain itself.Lighting
Just the natural light of the rising sun.Equipment
Nikon D90, Nikon 12-24 lens, my trusty Benro tripod.Inspiration
I'd wanted to get shots of of the mountain since before we left on out 10 day road trip of Tasmania, but I'd been looking for different angles and viewpoints. We did a loop around the lake, but nothing seemed to look as good as this view from the carpark, so I quickly took a few shots before we left, while the light was still good.Editing
This is 3 shots taken at different exposures, and is actually the first thing I even tried with Lightroom's new HDR blend function. Other than that, it was just a quick cloning out of any rubbish in the water to make it look a little cleaner, probably a bit of a bump to some of the sliders (contrast etc), and then just a very subtle orton effect type treatment in photoshop, with a gaussian blur layer and a high pass sharpening layer. In my camera bag
I usually carry a couple of lenses... The 12-24 I mentioned (although now it is a Sigma 10-20), a 50mm 1.8, then maybe 1 other one depending on what I want to carry. I also usually have ND filters, but I found they took too long to get out of the bag and mess around with, so I've been bracketing instead. It is more work in post, but quicker and easier in the field. I also almost always have my tripod with me. That is usually it, I've been trying to carry as little as possible lately.Feedback
Shoot anything and everything... In this age of digital there is no such thing as too many shots (as long as you have the hard drive space). Also, don't discount the easy, cliche shot. Sure, many people may have already done it, but they weren't you, with your eye and your gear on that particular day, so chances are you'll get a different shot that they got.
