Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken around the corner from my grandmothers house. In Lindsay, Ontario, Canada. The photo is a path that is leading to Ken Reid Conservation Area.

Time

This photo is definitely one of my favorite images I have ever photographed. One day I will have it enlarged and framed within my home. I remember waking up on the day of November 30, 2013, early in the morning, looking outside and seeing our first real snowfall for the season. The snow was very thick, with giant snowflakes, and each step I would take I could feel the thick packing snow beneath my feet, crunching with each footstep. Closer to dinner time, I had taken this photo as I was walking to Ken Reid Conservation Area. I remember thinking that this brisk winter path looked like something out of a fairy tale, and I could not let this photo opportunity slip up, so I pulled out my camera and snapped a couple shots. This walk was definitely a memorable one, that I will never forget. It was just me and my camera.

Lighting

This photograph did not need any additional lighting but what was naturally occurring during this brisk winter afternoon. The snow that is seen in this image was well enough to reflect the light of the sun on this overcast day.

Equipment

The equipment that was used was a Canon EOS 7D Camera, with the cameras kit lens of Canon 18-135mm.

Inspiration

I remember when I was younger I would be mystified over other photographers fall path photography. All of those rich colours, every leaf in the perfect place. It almost seemed like it was a painting and they would always be in the back of my mind during my photography. When I was walking on this winter day, I realized I have not seen much of winter path photography. I decided it was time to test out my skill on photographing a perfect image, along with sharing my passion for nature and landscape photography. I believe I captured this winter afternoon in great light.

Editing

I did tweak the lighting slightly to make the snow seem brighter and stand out more in comparison to the trees and tree branches. I also slightly changed the brown of the trees bark to look more like what I remembered it did in person, and to make it stand out better in contrast with the snow. This was all done on Photoshop CS3.

In my camera bag

In my photography bag, I carry along with me my Canon EOS 7D Camera and it's several lenses that I own. These lenses include; the Canon kit lens of 18-135mm, Canon 70-200mm, Canon 60mm. My most recent addition is my Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT external flash. I tend to bring along my lens cleaning kit which includes a Lens Cloth, a Hurricane Blower, Cleaning Swabs and some Liquid Cleaner. It all definitely weighs a lot, but each item is worth the carry weight.
