Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a public park overlooking a lake not too far from my home. I have taken pictures of this park during the fall and summer season, but this was the first one for a winter photo.

Time

This was taken on March this year. I was just walking around the park looking down at the lake when I spot a group of seagulls. On the right was a group of trees below the sun. I was struck by the contrast between the blue sky and the white snow, between the nourishing sun and the leafless tress...

Lighting

I want the image to look simple and beautiful. I was careful in balancing between the blue skies, the bright sun and reflective white snow.

Equipment

This was shot with a T3i Rebel with a telephoto lens @ 70mm.

Inspiration

In this particular day, I was enamored by the clear blue skies and the anticipation of spring (in a couple of weeks). I was also inspired by the play of contradiction. I saw a couple of families with children with their dogs playing in the snow versus my own family in my toasty house, between the cold wind versus the warmth of the sun, between the leafless trees and the colony of seagulls...

Editing

Yes, I have to, so that the image has a balance exposure. I have to "burn" the reflective snow. I also corrected the blue sky hue versus the sun at its foreground.

In my camera bag

As I'm new to photography, everything that I have been doing is part of the learning process. I usually bring with me two lenses, the 70-300mm telephoto and the stack lens (recently got my 24-105mm F/4L). I use this to frame and compose my shot. I also bring a tripod and ND filter for longer exposure.

Feedback

I normally plan my trip (drive) a couple of days before by checking the weather of the location. I also prepare by looking at images of the location in the internet to get specific areas of interest. Once I'm in the site and identified an interesting subject I would walk around it to see the best framing and composition, looking at the direction of the sun and where it casts its shadows on objects. I tend to be attracted to contrasting and strong color palette, in this case the blue against white. While taking the picture I thought that the white snow was the foreground and the blue sky with the sun was the background, but when I did the post-processing the white snow almost became the bottom frame and the blue sky became the dominant color, so I just went with that.
