Location
I took this photo when I lived in a small town named Rexburg in the state of Idaho. This is an old abandoned farm house located in and surrounded by fields of grain.Time
This image was taken between the hours of 11pm-1am. I knew there was going to be a full moon and wanted to capture the best lighting that I could.Lighting
I enjoy doing long night exposures to trick viewers into wondering when the photo was actually taken. This image is not a rising or setting sun, it's a full moon rising in the east. During the long exposure I used an off camera flash to illuminate the front of the house. Because the moon was so bright it added shadows from the house and rolling hills of grain.Equipment
Canon 1D MarkII Canon 24-70 2.8L series lens Canon 580ex Flash TripodInspiration
I use a program called photographers ephemeris, this allows you to see when and where the sun and moon will rise and set, also giving you direction in which shadows will be cast. When I discovered the moon would be rising a this particular direction I grabbed my gear and drove rather fast to the location. I wanted a unique image and I get what I wanted.Editing
My goal is always to get the best image in camera and use as little post processing as possible. This image was post processed decreasing noise, adding a little sharpness and adjusting white balance. In my camera bag
I always keep my bag with me as I never know when I will come across an amazing photo opportunity. My bag always has two camera bodies, 24-70 & 70-200 2.8L series lenses, 100mm macro, two flashes, remote and wired cable release. These items are always with me.Feedback
Knowing that I'm going to do this style of photo I always go and review the area during the day and choose my composition and where I'll set up my tripod, I find this very helpful as I can also spot any hazards that would be difficult to see at night. Use the photographers ephemeris so you know when moon will rise and where, this also helps with determining composition. Always always always use mirror lock-up mode with a 10sec timer so camera is stable and vibration free. Use the lowest possible ISO.
