Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Costa Rica. The garden had hummingbird feeders set up to attract the birds

Time

This was taken either late morning or early afternoon.

Lighting

There were moments of direct sun and others of shade from the ever changing weather. In the right light and angle, the colours of the bird flash their vibrant colours

Equipment

Camera: NIKON D4 Aperture: f/7.1 ISO: 1600 Shutter Speed: 1/400 Focal Length: 550/1

Inspiration

The sheer beauty of the hummingbird made me want to capture the vibrant colours while in flight

Editing

I always do post processing with basic adjustments in Lightroom including cropping and then got PS for further tonal adjustments and sharpening

In my camera bag

I normally carry a full frame and a crop body camera, some teleconverters and a variety of lens from 14mm to 600mm. For this image I was using a 400mm F 2.8 Nikon lens with Nikon 1.4 x teleconverter on my full frame Nikon D4 camera

Feedback

The best way to capture this type of opportunity is to be where there is lots of hummingbird activity. That usually means a hummingbird garden with a feeder. This image is of the hummingbird next to a feeder. There are many places to visit but Costa Rica is one of the best.
