I have chosen your image to be the winner in the Intimate Landscape Challenge. It came down to two images and I struggled to choose. I love that you have such wonderful composition, beautiful colour. The feeling of intimacy and solitude finally sold me. This is a wonderful image. Thanks for sharing.

I love your photo. I'm curious, what time did you take the photo so that it wasn't so blown out. Your metadata says you had a 60 sec shutter speed. Just wondering how you captured this so nicely.

It was taken mid-day. I was using a circular polarizer and a 9-stop neutral density filter. I wanted to remove glare (polarizer) and get that smooth water look (neutral density).

Behind The Lens

Location
This is the famous Punchbowl Falls located in the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland, Oregon. It is located on the Eagle River Trail and is a popular photography and hiking destination.
Time
I took the photo mid-day right before a rain storm. The sky was overcast and made for soft shadows.
Lighting
See above.
Equipment
This photo was taken with a Canon T3i, Asahi SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4, tripod, Hoya CP, and a Hoya NDX400.
Inspiration
I had done my research on hiking destinations in the Columbia River Gorge and this location definitely caught my eye. I had seen numerous photos of this location but not many that were shot as a long exposure. I wanted to go for a smooth water look while cutting some of the glare on the water.
Editing
Of course! I imported the three exposures into Lightroom and did a few small tweaks to white balance, dust spot removal, and removing chromatic aberrations. Using Photoshop's Merge to HDR, I created a 32-bit tiff file that I ran through Lightroom once more to adjust the whites, black, shadows, and highlights. Opening the image into Photoshop I boosted the clarity using Topaz Clarity, made a curves adjustment, and applied my blend of sharpening.
In my camera bag
I shoot with a lot of prime lenses mostly. At that time I had a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 fisheye, Asahi SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4, and a Asahi Super-Macro-Takumar 50mm f/4.0. I have a few other Canon lenses and a host of vintage glass that have adapters for the Canon EF mount. I have a Canon T3i and most recently purchased a Sony a6000 (no photos uploaded to ViewBug yet from this one).
Feedback
Be creative and patient. When I got to the falls, there was a host of people taking their cell phone selfy's and generally oblivious to the fact that others are there too. Have patience or learn how to take a few photos and mask out people in your photos.
