Location
This one was taken at Allen St Rock Club in Christchurch, NZ. I took it while the place was still being built so there were builders and quite a lot of unfinished bits and bobs kicking about, so lightstands and sight lines were kind of interesting (read; this was the only place I could take this shot from :) ).Time
I could cheat and look up the EXIF data for this, but off the top of my head, no idea. We had managed to cram in 4, not exactly geographically proximate, locations to shoot in 1 day so it was a bit of a whirlwind of a day.Lighting
This is one of the reasons I really liked this little corner, the club had a mood lighting spotlight that had not been set up yet so was just kind of phasing in and out of different colours. I was watching it's colour changing and really liked this rose colour, so we set up around that and this is the result.Equipment
Nikon D600, 85mm lens and Godox V850 flash with shoot through umbrella modifier...and scissors, because that tee shirt didn't look like that before hand! (I can't take credit for the scissor work though, those accurate cuts are all thanks to the model).Inspiration
I'd been to the club a couple of times before and its just a fab place to shoot, there are loads of little nooks to shoot in and we managed to get a lot of images in one place. We were going for this kind of vibe for a series of shots, and this place fitted the bill perfectly.Editing
The simple answer is everyone post processes this stuff, but this time I didn't worry about any kind of colour correction or balancing because we wanted that slight rose tint from the mood lighting. Its a pretty simple import, and the model in this case needs practically nothing in terms of editing. In my camera bag
At the time, this would have been my trusty D600 (without any oil issues), the 85mm f/1.4 Nikon lens and the 35mm f/2 Nikon lens. I've since upgraded to a D750 for the focussing. Lighting wise, I normally have with me three of the Godox V850 speed lights, plus stands and a mix of umbrellas and softboxes of various sizes from 1m to 2m in diameter. I use a bit of a DIY bracket setup so I can mount all three of these lights in one 2m softbox, it involves duct tape, its not pretty but its functional.Feedback
Talk to people is my biggest piece of advice, if you see somewhere or go somewhere that looks like it would be awesome to shoot in, ask to see the manager/owner and see if you can use the place. Being polite and friendly goes a long way, as does tagging and mentioning the places you've used anywhere you can. In my experience, very few people will flat out say no, and lets be honest, thats the worst thats going to happen and if you don't ask, you'll never know.
