Outstanding photograph, a masterpiece. When I saw it I immediately identified it as being the scales that cover the wings of butterflies and moths ... and it is, this is an awesome macro showing both the scales and the droplet of water ... magnificent ... and yes your description gives it even more meaning, however these scales act as a protective shield in many situations and are replaced ... still weathering and erosion will take its tally sooner or later ...
