I went there every Sunday during the summer with my grandmother. I never learned to flatfoot, but always joined in the dancing anyway.

This is without a doubt the most picturesque mill ever. I went there when I was about 17 years old and I'm now 74 and it's still beautiful. What took what I consider a masterpiece of a photo of it. Great job.

I love pictures of Mabry Mill. Haven't been up on the parkway in years but it's just beautiful. I don't live far so I hope to get back up there soon. Your photo is awesome.

Location
This photo was taken on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Mabry Mill in the month of October.Time
We were there mid-day until early afternoon. There are only a few places to stop for food on the Blue Ridge, Mabry Mill is a popular stop.Lighting
There was a storm moving in, later the area was blanketed in a very heavy fog. The fog made it difficult to find the road off of the mountain. The overcast skies can be a blessing for shooting many things.Equipment
I used a Canon Rebel Xti, Aperture F9, 1/3 of a second shutter speed. ISO was 100. Focal length was 33 mm, Canon EFS 17-85 telephoto lens. A light weight tripod is useful for getting the shot correct as well.Inspiration
I had seen photos of Mabry Mill for a number of years on calendars, greeting cards and websites. These photos were inspirational for me to plan a vacation that included this area. We were staying at Peaks of Otter, another photographic hot spot in the autumn.Editing
I ran this photo through photo shop a couple of different times. Using filters from Topaz Labs in different combinations until I came upon a mixture that was appealing to me.In my camera bag
The equipment I carry depends on how far I will be walking or hiking. Sometimes I travel light with the basics a couple of lenses, macro and a telephoto. Usually a ND filter or circular polarizer. Of course an electronic remote control for tripod shooting. My lenses are have image stabilizers built in. I have had the experience of carrying way too much equipment and paying for it with my back the next day. As you know there will be times when you wish you had this lens or that lens, but just make the best of what you are packing and utilize your skills.Feedback
I have traveled the entire length of the Blue Ridge Highway over a few years during the autumn. There are always spectacular things to photograph. Sometimes it may be small and require a macro lens, sometimes a wide angle and at other times a telephoto works the best. Take your time, move slowly; pay attention to where you have been. In other words, occasionally stop, turn around and look back.....other wise you may miss the best opportunity. Above all, make you shooting adventures fun.
