Behind The Lens

Location

Olde World Barber Shoppe in Warner Robins Georgia

Time

evening

Lighting

It was in the evening and the shop has a wall dividing the windows and waiting room and the area in which you get your hair cut. I set up a SB-800 to the right of the subject and an alien bee 800 on the far left wall to be stationary while i move around the shop.

Equipment

shot with nikon d800 24-70mm 2.8 lens. sb-800 on left and alien bee on far wall right roughly 15 feet away.

Inspiration

I was asked to come in by another barber, Jason Patridge. I got some candid shots of the other guys in the shop at the same time and Steven Putman, the featured barber in the photo, had this little boy with the most intense stare.

Editing

This barber shop is known to keep it traditional. It is the old school straight razor barber shop your grandpa went to. It needed a processing that fit. I chose the wet plate collection from three nails. and it fit, but the simple clean black in white fits great too.

In my camera bag

generally I carry 3 bodies nikon 800,700,60 60mm macro, 80-200mm and 24-70mm sb6,7 and 800 flashes and alien bee. paul buff cyber syncs for the flashes.

Feedback

lighting, subject, timing. are the top three things that come to mind. I often go to weddings or on location places and never know what the lighting is going to be like. This client wasn't the first one. I had 5-6 barber all with clients, but this kid had a look to him that stood out. Choose wisely. I originally was focused on the barber, hair and scissors. but when placing the frame I notice the boy's look and change the focus to encompass them both then i waited for the cut,. nothing was posed.
