Behind The Lens

Location

I took this one at home. I had created an open top and faced box of black foam and was practicing with different lighting (covering the top to the box slightly, half or not at all) with all sorts of different items and subject matter. my hand was there so, it got a cameo as well, came out rather well...i thought at least.

Time

Since this was an indoor experiment of mine it was at late evening. Usually when my creativity kicks in, my relaxation.

Lighting

Not much. I covered the top of the box with a spare piece of foam in different degrees, with just a lowly little spring adjustable desk lamp place in different locations and opening and closing the lamps face. There were no other light sources.

Equipment

before I got my Nikon Coolpix 840, i was stuck with the clunky 10 year old family camera, so, sadly, relied on my iPhone until the Nikon. But, I'm resourceful, sometimes that is.

Inspiration

when i was in art classes, from a very young age till my second semester in architecture (should have gone with the art college i looked at, just didn't want to be a "starving" artist.Anyway, in almost every art class, no matter what medium, the rule was, the human body is by far the hardest subject to draw, so i always spent a lot of time drawing my own hand so it kind of happened by habit.

Editing

no. oh natural.

In my camera bag

well, for the moment, it will be the Nikon, but, sometimes i see a spontaneous moment and rely on the iPhone (6 S Plus), i also have an iPad Pro which really is quite a machine, i don't think people really know what power it has, for $800, you can bet its a computer, not just a run of the mill iPad. (i also LOVE digital art and have an iMac 27" 5k retina that is my baby and all of the Macphun series software along with photoshop elements 13 and 14. thats about all for what its worth, slowly saving up for a decent DSRL with a few good lenses, thats going to be my next purchase.

Feedback

TINKER, TINKER, TINKER. I am curious by nature and want to know how things WORK. so its like "whats this button do?" or "i wonder what will happen if i do that" how do i REALLY operate this camera manually. But i think the best advice is the old saying...."STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES". You need to be aware of any and all things around you in the world, like my eyes are like a constant camera lens looking for that "perfect" shot. Slow it down, they are EVERYWHERE. the hand with the light, it was a matter of moving that light and foam on top of the foam box. nothing more, but the image appeared, and there you have it. When i go to take pictures i have no idea what I'm looking for, I'm just looking. so the shot wasn't as amazing as you thought it would turn out, put it in the "questionable" stack and move on. i spend more time sifting thru to find the good stuff than i do taking it. I hope some or any of this helps/inspires anyone, even if its just one person. Mark.
