Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Dianchi Park in Kunming, Yunnan province, China.

Time

My wife and I had hired a car and driver to get us to some scenic spots which beat travelling on tourist bus and being tied to a tour guide timetable. This park took a couple of hours to get to, so the sun was quite high when the picture was taken just before 11am on 1st February 2014.

Lighting

The lighting is all natural, and was one of many days there weren't any clouds in the sky to diffuse the light.

Equipment

The photo was taken on a Canon 7D, 50mm lens and the wife acting as a tripod.

Inspiration

I'm from the UK so seeing seagulls dive-bombing for food is nothing new to me. Like my wife, most visitors here flinched when a seagull snatched food, so it was fun to set up the shot and then swap places so the image could be captured.

Editing

No adjustments were made to the photo. At the time, I was renewing my interest in photography and the camera was a new investment. I hadn't stepped uploading photos into LR.

In my camera bag

Aside from the body of the Canon 7D, I have a 50mm and 24-70mm, an ND filter & adaptor rings, lens hood, manual shutter release, a hotshoe flash with remote trigger, Several batteries and a handy dual USB battery charger. I also have a tripod in its own bag.

Feedback

For a location this busy with lots of kids running around, you need a partner (romantic or not) with a steady hand to either be the person holding the bird's food or to take the picture/protect your tripod and a lot of patience.
