Behind The Lens

Location

Thank you for asking, I took this photo along a nature trail in Charlotte, NC.

Time

Awesome question! I took this photo around 6 pm on a summer day.

Lighting

I wanted this image to have a slight contrast to highlight the beautiful structure of my model, but also keep it soft enough to express a sense of innocence. This was in a very shady area so I had to move around to get the best angle and work with the sun.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D Markii at the time with a 50mm lens. It was always my go-to lens with outdoor shots because I could bring the F-stop down as much as possible and it tends to maintain a natural look.

Inspiration

I always loved seeing those images from Holi festivals with the different colored powders. I wanted to bring that sense of creativity to my shoot and it took on a softer energy, which I ended up falling in love with.

Editing

I brought it into photoshop for some light brightening and dodging. The model already had perfect skin so there was nothing to touch up on her at all.

In my camera bag

I keep my favorite lenses which are: Canon 85mm lens, Canon 50mm lens, and a Youngnuo 35mm lens. I also will keep a pop-up battery operated light just in case I need it for my shoot. I will also keep a flash handy along with my Canon 5D Markii

Feedback

When making the colored powder, I used cornstarch and food coloring. It wasn't as vibrant as I wanted it to be, but at the same time, it kept a nice pastel color palette. Always make sure you know the time of sunset and look for the golden hour.
