Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center in the upper Florida Keys, where so many species of birds are being rehabilitated and where many migratory species use as their winter home.

Time

I particularly love this image because I almost didn't take it. It was the end of a long shooting day under the sun. At around 4pm I decided to pack up and head home. That's when a nagging urgency compelled me to stop by the beach area of the sanctuary before leaving. So glad I did. I found lots of pelicans there. They were so relaxed, like they were doing Happy Hour. I just crouched down to eye-level, remained very calm, enjoyed their lovely chatter and humor while I snapped a very few shots, no more than 20. I didn't want my busy-ness to disrupt the beauty of the moment.

Lighting

The light was definitely on my side for this one. The winter season in the Florida Keys enjoys such a lovely light. Clear, gentle, vibrant. It reflects so much color! Here I'm lucky to have late afternoon, gentle direct light. 4:08pm on a January 12th, 2015. This is about 90 minutes away from sunset.

Equipment

This image was taken with my Nikon D600 paired with the Nikkor 80-400mm, f/ 4.5 - 5.6 set at f/6.3, ISO 100, 1/320sec

Inspiration

My inspiration comes from a deep desire to share wild beauty. The world is in sore need of real beauty, beyond glamour and celebrity. Nature's beauty is so powerful, and anyone who mindfully pays attention to it is privileged to the deepest of bliss. That's my inspiration for this and all of my images. It is my hope that the brief and deep moment of connection I'm able to achieve can encourage people to go out there and do the same. This attitude has opened the doors to a deep connection to nature and the wild. The way I gaze with wonder allows for nature to show its wonders in return.

Editing

I shoot RAW images only, so they do undergo processing. I actually re-edited this image with newer, more elegant, newly acquired knowledge. I'm a relatively young photographer. My decision to start a passionate photography life began in May of 2012. I use DxO and PS6 for my editing needs.

In my camera bag

I always carry my tele-photo lens. Either Nikkor 80-400 or my Tamron 150-600, now paired to a Nikon D810. I really enjoy shooting with the big Tamron. This can be an outstanding lens when used properly. Best value out there! I always pack a flash, a sniper camera strap, and my trusty 20mm f/2.8 prime lens. Love the chance to capture BIG views without warping the image too much.

Feedback

I believe that the technical aspects of photography, as complicated as they may be, are the easiest part of this visual medium. The real hard work is in developing a kind of sensitivity that allows you to see and feel the moment. The rest is just pushing buttons, so you better be good at it. Respect the medium, know it intimately, make it part of the physical "you". That's how I was able to connect with my subject and enjoy a brief moment of curiosity and mutual observation, then I just clicked :)
