I took this picture at a friend's home, I really just wanted to test his new Sony A7R II camera.Time
This photo was taken late at night just before Christmas. Everybody was well-fed and a little tired. I only had limited incandescent light and a bit of a shy subject.Lighting
My goal was to learn the capacities of a camera I hadn't ever used, so I wanted it to be as challenging as I could make it. No flash, only limited incandescent light, really close proximity, just a few inches from his nose, shy subject.Equipment
I used my friend's Sony A7R II and a 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens, Hand-held, no flash.Inspiration
I'm always looking to learn new compositions and techniques, I was happy I could try the capabilities of a high-end mirror-less camera with my friend's beloved pets, Julian and Apache. The conditions were quite challenging, the window of opportunity for a remarkable capture was quite narrow. Best conditions to learn something new.Editing
I use DXO Photo Lab, and PS 6 to process all of my images. In my camera bag
I normally shoot with Nikon. I'm having lots of fun stretching the capacities of my new D850, most often paired with my Tamron 150-600mm. I always carry my 20mm prime, flash, remote control, and my trusty tripod.Feedback
Just be gentle. It's very easy to push a button and get some photo, but it's not easy to get animals, domestic or wild, to give that special expression that reveals essence. Try to make friends with them, ask for permission, pay fierce attention, and be ready.
