I took this photo at one of the most beautiful parks in Louisville, Cherokee Park. There was a hillside right behind this gazebo, and when the sisters started going down the hill, their dad started to chant, "LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT...!" It was really funny. They walked for a good little ways and then had to come right back up the hill! So I managed to capture their descent.Time
This was in the early afternoon on a fairly overcast day, but some rays of sun did manage to come through the clouds. The lighting was perfect for what we were shooting, since we got a nice, natural glow on their hair. This is usually a bit earlier than I prefer because of the lighting (6:00-7:00pm EST is my absolute favorite hour), but the sun's height in the sky really added some drama to the photo.Lighting
I was lighting this one with my Canon Speedlite, which I have connected to my hotshoe via a hotshoe cable. My awesome wife was holding it up nice and high so we could get some good lighting!Equipment
I shot this with a Canon 5D Mark II, my 70-200mm f/2.8L lens, and a Canon Speedlite.Inspiration
Honestly, this photo was just one of those accidental captures that ends up becoming one of your favorites! I took many, many more from this session, but this one definitely became a quick favorite of mine.Editing
I absolutely did! The sun flare that's over top of the girls is actually there, but I definitely brightened it up some and added a little flare on top of it to give it more emphasis. I adjusted the colors and sharpened it with Greater Than Gatsby's Three Nails Collection actions in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I normally carry my Canon 5D Mark II, my Canon 5D, a 70-200mm f/2.8L lens, a 50mm f/1.8 lens, a 28-135mm f/3.5 lens, my Speedlite, an Omega Reflector (designed by Jerry Ghionis for Westcott Lighting), and a 50-foot hotshoe cable. I dream of having a remote-control system, but the cable has been doing just fine for now!Feedback
Something that I try to do when I'm on a shoot -- particularly when there are multiple subjects who naturally interact with each other -- is keep my eyes open at all times. Most of the time, those special moments occur when I least expect it! I pose them and tell them what I would like for them to do, and I'm very adamant about their letting me give them "advice" on how to carry themselves. But then, one that pose is done and they naturally loosen up a bit, I capture what they do between poses -- particularly little things that evoke smiles and laughter. If I had not have been paying attention or had been thinking about the next spot where I wanted to shoot, I would have completely missed this. So my advice would be: Always be looking for a shot. I just took one a couple days ago that I have up on my Facebook page that was completely unplanned but WELL worth the wait!
