Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the early hours of the morning in Amboselli, Kenya. I am a self taught photography, so every time I pick up the camera is pretty much a new lesson for me.

Time

This was one of the many images of this tree taken that morning as the lightening was constantly changing as the sun came up. I was full of excitement as this was only the second day in Kenya and one of the very many early starts on that trip. The use of the tripod made exposing the image easier especially with the light slowly getting brighter as time went on. This photo was taken on 5th January 2015.

Lighting

The aim was for a silhouette of the tree with the sun rising behind it and really capturing the bright oranges and yellows of the sunrise. This was a rare time that lightening really worked in my favour. I think this was pulled off quite well as it shows the stillness and peace-fullness of this Kenyan landscape before the day unfolds and it becomes survival of the fittest for the local wildlife that call Amboselli home.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon EOS 60D with a EF 100-400mm Lens. 1/2000 sec at f/5.6 with an iso of 400 and focal length at 150mm.

Inspiration

I was on a tour with Chris Bray Photography, an Australian based photographer who runs photography safaris around the world. This was one of our planned stops, which was one of many. One of the many things that makes these tours great is the new skills that are taught along the way. One of these 'lessons' was silhouette photography, something that I hadn't really done before. There was about 9 of us on tour and taking this shot. All spread out (not to far as to stay safe) to get our own version and to explore our own creativity. It was a great experience to be able to showcase this new skill and just to witness this beautiful part of the world.

Editing

I am self taught in the editing aspect and try not to edit to much as I don't want the beauty of the image to get lost. Using lightroom, I only edited the basics just to harness the shadows and colours.

In my camera bag

My bag is very light compared to many other photographers. I only ever carry around my EOS Canon 60D with a 18-55mm and a 55-250mm lens in my bright orange low pro bag. A very simple bag.

Feedback

Kenya is an amazing place to visit, whether for work, leisure, in a group or on your own (but please be careful). Kenya and Africa in general should be on any wildlife, landscape, travel photographer and anyone who loves going off the beaten track. There is so much life to be found and no day is the same; you can visit the same spot at the same time everyday and guaranteed something different will happen. Be patient and respectful, this is the wild after all. Tip one would be, be shutter happy but don't be afraid to cull your images right down, I swear I had over 100 of just one Elephant, nobody needs that many and their will be ampul opportunities for many different species and capturing them at different times of the day. Tip two is always have a fast shutter speed on, you never know what will happen! Tip three, remember to put the camera down from time to time and just enjoy being where you are, sometimes the camera doesn't do Kenya any justice. And finally, have fun!
