Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Kullaberg in southern Sweden. The photo is from June last year.

Time

The photo was taken at 3:50 in the morning, just before sunrise.

Lighting

I wanted to take this photo in the morning, before sunrise, so that the soft light would fall onto the red:ish rocks in the background.

Equipment

I used a Sony A7R with a Canon 16-35L/4 wide angle zoom at 25mm. ISO 100, f/11 and 2.5 sec. No filters.

Inspiration

As a lone cloud drifted into the frame, the composition became more balanced. But I had to wait a few minutes for it!

Editing

Post processing using Lightroom. I pushed the shadows and lowered the highlights. A slight increase in constrast, saturation and clarity. That's it!

In my camera bag

Sony A7R Sony A7II Fotodiox Canon EF to Sony FE adapter Canon 16-35L/4 Sony-Zeiss FE 35/2.8 Sony-Zeiss FE 55/1.8 Zeiss Batis 85/1.8 Polarization filters Flashlight (good for maneuvering in the dark). Camera cleaning stuff

Feedback

I think that the three most important factors in landscape photography are 1. light, 2. light and 3. light. 45 minutes before dawn and after sunset provide the softest light. A tripod is essential to be able to compose carefully and to handle the longer exposure times that dawn and dusk imply. With good light, less post-processing is required making for better end results. You'll be tired for sure, but in the end it'll be worth it!
