Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken at a place called RiverView a beautiful property in the Canberra Region (Australia)

Time

This photo was taken early morning between 6:30 -7am, Canberra has very cold winters, which does not stop us from having to get up early to drive 20min numerous times a week to tend to Merlin, and some of the best photo's I've taken over the years on this property have been on early foggy winter mornings, and this particular morning was stunning, the paddocks were damp the clouds were low creating the fog, It was truly beautiful and it made you want to stop in the middle of the paddock and just soak it all up.

Lighting

I have to admit that when I got out of the car to go with my son to trudge through the paddocks to catch Merlin I only grabbed my camera with the18-200mmn lens attached, I didn't grab any other equipment, and taking extra equipment while walking up and down hills in long grass through the paddocks can be exhausting, so Nature provided the lighting that particular morning, and nature at times does not always make it easy when it comes to lighting! But not totally impossible to work with!

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Canon EOS 60D 18-200mm lens, a lens that i seem to use the most, I was following my son and Merlin through the paddock and couldn't resist the shot when they suddenly stopped to enjoy the peace of the early morning, so no tripod was used and even though Merlin is familiar to a flash, no flash was used.

Inspiration

I always seem to be looking for shots that show connection, we have had Merlin on this property for 8 years and I can honestly say, each day wether it be morning, noon or dusk the property gives you something new to photograph. My son and Merlin have a beautiful connection with each other and you never know what sort of mood Merlin will present to you, we've had calm, cheeky, playful, explosive and many more expressions of his personality, that alone inspires me, but when you put a beautiful peaceful morning with fog that creates a mysterious atmosphere, dewy long grass and nothing around but the open paddocks, beautiful trees and the kangaroos peeking their heads up over the long grass checking out what is making noise through the grass and your horse that as you are following behind as he is being lead just calmly stops to take in the site of the kangaroos and the stillness of the morning, while my son has tuned into his mood and just steps in to give affection to Merlin. What a combination!!!!! A moment to truly be inspired by!

Editing

With this photo i didn't do a lot of post- processing as i have still yet to learn and become familiar with these tools, but the photo was lightened, sharpened a little and a antique filter was used as i liked the look of the affect it created.

In my camera bag

My camera body Canon Eos 60D with my 4 different lenses, 10 - 18mm, 50 mm, 18 - 200mm and 70 - 300mm, my favourite being the 18 - 200 mm, it is the one i seem to use the most. Always extra batteries for camera, and flash, extra SD cards so i'm always prepared. I always make sure both batteries are charged and ready to go as you never know when you need to pick up the camera to capture the moment!

Feedback

There are times where you need to plan ahead with the photo's you want to capture, but in this case it really was a moment where i had the camera in hand at a place i loved to take photo's of, but with no expectation of a planned photo, just taking my time enjoying all that was around me, but being open to the possibility of capturing what was around me, there are times when the very best photo's you take are not planned but just being in the moment of what is around you and as photographers having that eye that recognises when to capture it!
