Location
This is a sunset shot looking west at the site of the US Civil War battle of Chancellorsville in central Virginia. The large swaths of land where these epic battles occured are a regular arguement with preservationists vs developers. The battlefields of central Virginia have been systematically purchased to allow to remain the farmland and wide open spaces they have always been. The small farm building in the mid-range is the only modern alteration to the same view from 175 years ago looking west toward the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge mountain ranges.Time
I was driving eastward toward the City of Fredericksburg after a long day's work shoot and saw the potential for a vibrant sunset in my rearview mirror. This site is familiar but not ordinarily on my trek but I knew the spring wildflowers were in bloom and thought it might make a nice contrast with the setting glow. Sunsets here are often lovely but this one was particularly worthy of capture.Lighting
I wanted to capture the cloud structure and afterglow of the setting sun but was equally pleased the wildflowers were bright to capture the last touch of light and bring the eye forward as well.Equipment
Point and shoot Olympus. Nothing else. It's often not about the equipment. Train your eye.Inspiration
The recent announcement of permanent preservation of this agricultural setting by the Central Virginia Battlefield Trust was on my mind when both proximity and a gorgeous sunset presented an opportunity. And I specifically wanted to celebrate the freedom for seeds to grow wild as a win against yet another sub-division.Editing
I used high def to accentuate both the foreground and sky.In my camera bag
Not much! I carry an extra SD card, battery and lens cloth. Generally, these are not even in a bag but in cargo pants pockets.Feedback
Learn what's local. There are dozens of vistas like this within 25 miles of where I live. I strongly suggest always having the camera around and learn - even while stuck in traffic - the seasons and direction of the light at different times of the day. Sounds simple but being prepared when a gorgeous sky is setting up is more than half the battle. Pun intended.
