Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot under a highway bridge near my home.

Time

This was shot around 6:00am

Lighting

This image was something that reminded me to observe my surroundings. I was taking a sunrise walk under a highway bridge. Walking east, the morning light was very beautiful and I made a number of shots. As I came our from under the bridge, I turned to look back, and saw this wonderful X formed by shadow and reflection.

Equipment

This was shot handheld with an Olympus E300.

Inspiration

The changing morning light was beautiful to watch change, and when this X emerged, I got this shot. It was only visible for a few minutes.

Editing

I did a black and white conversion and a sepia tint.

In my camera bag

I usually have one or two Sony A77 camera bodies, a monopod, a 11-14 f2.8 Wide angle lens , and a 28-75 f2.8 zoom lens. I carry a polarizing filter for each lens. As I have been shooting more landscapes, I carry a tripod and some graduated ND filters. I have found the suntracker app very helpful in knowing what direction the sun will come from. It even shows the golden hours and can show a map.

Feedback

I think the main thing is to be very open to seeing the changes in light and learning to anticipate what will happen next. Don't feel you have to be in a "scenic " location for interesting shots. Locations like this under a bridge are not usually high on list of desirable places. Let the image come to you and be prepared to get the shot at the right moment. Practice and experiment.
