This phototure is like an explosion of a beautiful bokeh with a marbled white growing of out of a violet cloud. One of my favorites in your portfolio.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on a dry grassland near my home town Vienna. There are many insects to find on this very special natural meadow.

Time

I'm always leaving the house very early for photographing. I love the soft light at sunrise. This photo was taken at exactly 4:56am in the morning on 1st of august. The sun had just risen and its rays allowed to create some flares in the background.

Lighting

The soft morning light at sunrise was perfect for this shot. At that time of the day it is easier to get a balanced and correct exposure, because the light isn't that intense as it is an hour later.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 5d Mark III. I used my Canon 100 Macro f/2.8 USM, a remote trigger and a Feisol tripod. That's all the equipment that was used.

Inspiration

I always try to make my macro shots a little bit unique and artistic. So I love to work with special structures, light, colours or flares in the background. On this morning I wanted to create a photo with lots of flares. So I was searching for the perfect location and light to realise my imagination.

Editing

In this particular case I had to brighten up the butterfly a little bit in Lightroom, because backlit situations are always a little bit tricky to handle. In general I try to do less post processing so I have to take care of the camera settings while taking my photos.

In my camera bag

Canon 5d Mark III, Canon EF 100 Macro 2.8 USM, Canon EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM. And last but not least some old manual lenses: a Trioplan 100 f/2.8 or a Asahi pentax 300 f/3.5. I love the Trioplan for the crazy bokeh and the Asahi for it´s smooth bokeh and great sharpness. And of course, I always have a small reflector and a diffuser in my bag.

Feedback

For macros it is important to know where to go and where to find the insects you want to take a photo of. So you have to do some scouting. It's all about the light – so get out early in the morning. The soft light will improve your photos a lot and if you choose the right location you will be able to get some nice flares in the bokeh. Shooting with aperture wide open, and a long lens gets the flares bigger than using a short lens. In backlit situations you can use a small reflector to lighten up the subject you are shooting. Even if you want to shoot some experimental photos, it is necessary to have some technical knowledge to get the result you expect and handle difficult light situations.
