Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Highlands of Scotland along the way to the Isle of Skye.

Time

This photo was taken around Mid-day.

Lighting

This photo originally began as one of my least favorite photos from our trip...the sun was so bright it washed out the colors and the detais of the stone. I corrected the exposure and color in Lightroom, and it's become one of my favourite photos.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a Nikon D7100 and 18-105 f3.5 lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I was, (and still am), going through a phase of fascination with moving water. This photo was taken on a vacation trip to Scotland, so I had ample opportunity to take pictures of the Highland waterfalls and streams...to the point where my wife was becoming annoyed. It seems like every 5 minutes I was pulling over to the side of the road to snap another shot. The Highlands were a magical place for me.

Editing

This photo has been processed, but what strikes me the most is what the people viewing this photo can't see. I remember when I was framing for the shot, that I didn't think the photo would turn out very well; the sun was glaring, the wind from passing cars seemed to push me everytime I focused and the waterfall ended in a not-so-picturesque collection culvert that carried it under the highway. A tiny bit of cropping, and some color and exposure correction made this one of my favourite photos.

In my camera bag

I try to travel light, as I usually have three kids in tow, so my equipment for vacations is limited to a Thinktank shoulder bag, Nikon D7100 body, Nikon 10-105 f3.5 and a Tokina 11-22 f2.8 for when I need a wide angle.

Feedback

Always have your camera with you! Whether on vacation or driving to work, you'll never be a able to capture that mind-blowing sunrise or sunset if you don't have your equipment. Also, give photos that you've disregarded when transferring a second look! This waterfall didn't make the cut for me initially, but having later gone back and given a second look, I thought it was worthwhile to see what some editing could do. It's become a favourite from our trip!
