This photo was from a trip up to Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island, on the tucked away Tonquin Beach.Time
We hung out on the beach in the afternoon and waited a couple hours for the sun to start setting.Lighting
I spent a good 45 minutes waiting for the sun to reach this point in the sky... The lighting this entire day was quite magical because of a forest fire raging farther south on the coast, it created a twilight effect that followed us aroundEquipment
I shot this with my Canon 40D with a 17-85mmInspiration
I had heard about great sunsets up Tofino way, most notably on Long Beach but had become privy to this beach from an acquaintance. The beach itself is quite a special place to hang out, tucked away from the touristy town of Tofino. After a disappointing capture from Long Beach the night before I wanted to try my luck again and luckily was able to capture thisEditing
For post processing I usually keep it pretty simple. For this image a vignette and a slight boost to the colour, some other basic tweaks like contrast were applied as well.In my camera bag
I usually keep 2 Canon cameras on myself when shooting. A 40D equipped with a 17-85mm, and a T3 with a 50mm lens. Both cameras allow me to switch between landscape and closer detail shots which helps keep my profile diverse.Feedback
Sunsets and landscapes are all about patience. I kept having people walk by on the beach or boats cruising by in the distance, if you wait long enough and take enough photos there will always be a perfect shot.
