Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a small lake just north of my grandparents' home in northern Minnesota. My grandmother, husband, and myself had gone for a drive when we stopped on the shore of Pine Lake.

Time

Around 7 pm or so, we were on our way home from dinner when we stopped and the view was just breathtaking. It's a small lake, but the area around it is just so picturesque, I knew immediately I needed to shoot it.

Lighting

The summer sun was just in the absolutely perfect spot that the image pretty much just framed itself. This shot is definitely a case of being in the right place at the right time lighting wise.

Equipment

This was shot on my Canon Rebel T5i with an 18-55mm lens. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

I had just gotten my new camera and had begun taking it everywhere I went. When the opportunity presented itself to capture this amazing lake with the setting sun and a silhouette of my husband staring out across it, I jumped on it. The moment was so perfect and serene, and I could not be more pleased with how the photo came out.

Editing

This photo was definitely a fluke. I didn't have to make any major Post adjustments. I sharpened it up a little bit but it came out my camera looking nearly perfect.

In my camera bag

For moments like these, when I'm just out with my camera, I don't like to bring a huge bag of all of my stuff, so unless it's for a portrait session I typically only have my 18-55 kit lens.

Feedback

I honestly don't even remember how I got this picture. I had just gotten my T5i and was playing around with all the different settings to see how things came out and I was absolutely floored to have made this image happen. So I guess my advice is just play around with the f/stop and shoot.
