Behind The Lens

Location

This was a casual photo. It was taken in a mechanical factory in Guatemala. The chain is part of a mechanism for opening and closing the factory door. I took the photo directing the objective to the floor of the factory. The green color was due to the floor - it can be noted same little dust marks at the floor.

Time

It was about 3 pm. I was boring to be waiting for the machining of a work piece that I'd asked for and decided to take some pictures around. I usually travel for work to other countries, specially to little villages where I have the chance to observe the local way of life, and, of course, I always take my camera with me :). Thus I spend as much as possible the dead time job taking pictures of everything that is new to my perception. Due to the photography I can keep my attention connected to everything around me.

Lighting

The light is natural and was coming from outside of the factory. I was standing exactly at the door of the factory.

Equipment

The camera was a Lumix DMC-FZ40. The lens are Leica 1:2.8-5.2/4.5-108 ASPH. No tripod or flash was used.

Inspiration

As I approached to the chain, I become impressed by the sense of depth and even some vertigo. The blurred background created a sense of insecurity by the lack of a defined floor while the steel chain passed me the feeling of something solid and secure to support me in the void. In order to accentuate this idea I approached more and more the objective to the chain to show better the first and robust links. The contrast gave me an idea of how we live vainly trying to make our lives safer through currents that could sustain us over the river of our lives.

Editing

Yes. I used same photoshop post-processing for this picture in order to increase the steel details and create an aging mind. My interest was to increase the contrast of the current details with the blurred green floor.

In my camera bag

Only the camera. For me, the low weight of the camera and accessories is vital to preserve the maximum of my freedom and flexibility to get the best time, the best lighting, the best point of view and framework and the best possible story. For years I've discussed with myself whether or not I should move to a camera with more features but yet, I remain in doubt :)

Feedback

There are several fields of the photography and each should have specific tips. For me, photography is like to hunt new shapes, colors, lights and stories. For this it is necessary to keep the attention connected as much as possible all around us to everything that seems different from the ordinary. More specifically speaking, I believe that a good picture should comprise interesting lights, colors and forms, added to a balanced framework and an instigating POV. However, a great photo should comprise all these subjects and more a story to the imagination of the observer. And yet, one should not forget to add the cherry to the cake, that is the detail that will capture the viewer attention for the first seconds after what, the picture quality will be responsible for captivate its attention to the rest of the work :)
