Behind The Lens

Location

Iceland in the golden circle. from log cabin.

Time

it was taken at 1am

Lighting

this was my first time with the Northern lights so it was a bit of best guess for the camera settings. especially with the light balance i opted for daylight as a setting with an ISO of 1600 and exposure time of 30 secs.

Equipment

Canon 650d with Tokina AT-X PRO 11-16mm lens. on tripod.

Inspiration

With the northern lights going crazy outside our cabin with it being a perhaps a once in a lifetime moment that is inspiration enough.

Editing

lightroom some colour addition, shadows and noise reduction.

In my camera bag

i try and keep things simple if i am doing landscapes normally 2 cameras canon 6d and 750d a wide angle and a zoom lens. HD filters, colour filters, extra batteries and memory cards, lens cleaning cloth. i also keep an emergency blanket in my bag and a torch( light painting and seeing the camera settings)

Feedback

the problem although not a problem i found with the Aurora was a question of shall i do long or short exposures i opted for short as there was so much going on in the sky and i was scared to miss it also not having experienced them before i thought if i took lots of shots then at least some of them would be good. If you are going to take shots of the lights concentrate on focus, white balance and exposure time too much exposure will give you loads of unwanted noise.
