Behind The Lens

Location

In Flowery Branch Georgia! I decided since there were so many fences here, I'd spend an afternoon just shooting fences!

Time

I love taking photos early evening, but this day decided an afternoon shoot would give me the lighting I wanted for the fences. I love the shadows that often come with shooting fences.

Lighting

I love that there is a little light shining in the background. It gives this photo just enough light, but doesn't overtake the mood I was trying to convey with this old fence. This fence obviously is a white fence, but due to our very humid climate, it was full of molds growing, which gives it a dark, I think really pretty fence to look at!

Equipment

I shoot with a Nikon D700. I just held the camera, shot in aperture, and hit fence after fence that afternoon.

Inspiration

There are so many fun things to shoot here in Georgia. I'm from the Southwest, and have only been here in Georgia a few years. It's been so fun for me to shoot the trees, because there are seasons!! There are a lot of beautiful churches, cemeteries, and oh so many fences! Once day I decided I'd go shoot fences to see what I could come up with, and I love all the fence photos I shot that day! I see beauty in the simple things. Fences usually are put up as a barrier, either to a house, or subdivision, with the idea of blocking people out. I love that there is beauty in that as well!

Editing

The only thing I did with this particular photo is crop it. I usually use a vignette to finish off the edges, but can't remember if I did that or not here.. it almost looks like I didn't do anything else.

In my camera bag

My bag contains my camera, two lenses, but I almost always just shoot with my Nikon 28-300mm lens, an external flash just in case, and attached to my bag is a bag which holds my Gary Fong diffusers... simple!

Feedback

I would tell other photographers to think outside the box at times. I have had many people look at all my fence photos and tell me how beautiful they are, but never thought of fences as something beautiful before. I would also say, be creative with your angles. Shoot from below, shoot from above... use leading lines.. especially with the fences. Sometimes old and dirty things can be transformed through a photo. I love being able to turn this fence into something that is pleasing to the eye, and simply beautiful!
