Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken midday on Vancouver Island in British Columbia,Canada. I was driving over the mountains from the west to the east and this lake appeared as I was ascending. There are not a lot of places to stop but I managed to pull over and capture this view. From what I understand the lake is used mostly for hunting and fishing.

Time

This was taken at midday in early September.

Lighting

The lighting was flat, no clouds in the sky. That worked well with the flat surface of the water.

Equipment

For this I used a Sony A7R handheld. I used a 24-70 at 35mm.

Inspiration

I am attracted to simple scenes of calm and equanimity. That because we live in a complicated world with things happening fast all around us. My photography is for me a counter balance to that. It is the yin to life's yang.

Editing

Yes, I love to post process, it helps me express my thoughts, feelings and dreams. Because of the flat light I felt this was not so much about the colors as the stillness of the scene. I choose to use a monochrome treatment with a vignette

In my camera bag

I still carry my beloved A7R, however my Sony A7RII is now my camera of choice. For landscapes I primarily use a 10-18 wide on the A7R a 24-240 on the A7rII. My main accessories are a set of filters. I'll use a polarizer during the day and every so often I'll pull out the big stopper for long exposures.

Feedback

I have come learn that scenes like this can be found all around us. Photography is as much a state of mind as anything else. If you look at a scene and then reduce it to a frame, a subset of the whole, you will find scenes of calm and stillness amongst the chaos. It's how you look and what you look for that matters more than being up in the mountains and happening upon a scene like this. That for me has become a constant theme in photography, looking for calm amongst the chaos.
