Time

Mid afternoon

Lighting

No

Equipment

Olympus OMD and 75mm lens

Inspiration

The monkeys were everywhere and very animated. They would jump in front of you for a moment, and wait for food. If you upset them in any way, they would get quite aggressive. They were very dynamic subjects and I was keen to capture their essence. This mother with her babies jumped up in front of me, and I just instinctively shot the photo. There was no time to react, just enough time only to shoot. I caught them, all three, at the precise moment that they were engaged with me.

Editing

Just turned the image to black and white, and made the background dark, both to emphasise the graphic qualities of the image, and to ensure that nothing diluted the raw energy of our brief encounter

In my camera bag

These days it is generally a Leica rangefinder with just one lens. It does just about everything beautifully and simply. All I have to do is get the focus and framing right.

Feedback

You need to be in the moment and ready to take the image reflexively. No time to worry about DOF, focus or anything else. So get you camera set up before, say with your shutter at F8, ISO as high as you can go, and a high shutter speed. Then just try to anticipate the moment. It will only last for tenths of a second. I got a lot of practice shooting like this at my son's rugby matches, where things would happen in a moment - great training.
