Title:The John Hancock Shot Taken From: City Gallery in the Historic Water Tower, Chicago IL Google Earth: 41.896820, -87.624439 About the photo: This photo has 3 main landmarks of Chicago which include the famous John Hancock Tower, The Water Tower Plaza Skyscraper and the old Chicago Water Tower. The John Hancock Center is a 100-story, 1,127-foot (344 m) tall skyscraper, located at 875 North Michigan Avenue in the Streeterville area of Chicago, Illinois, United States. It was constructed under the supervision of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, with chief designer Bruce Graham and structural engineer Fazlur Khan. When the building topped out on May 6, 1968. The building was named for John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, a developer and original tenant of the building and has the nickname "Big John". John Hancock Observatory allows a 360° view of the city, up to four states, and a distance of over 80 miles (130 km). The Chicago Water Tower is a contributing property in the Old Chicago Water Tower District landmark district. It is located at 806 North Michigan Avenue along the Magnificent Mile shopping district in the Near North Side community area of Chicago, Illinois in a small park, the Jane M. Byrne Plaza. The tower was constructed to house a large water pump, intended to draw water from Lake Michigan; it now serves as a Chicago Office of Tourism art gallery. The Chicago Water Tower is the second-oldest water tower in the United States, after the Louisville Water Tower in Louisville, Kentucky. The Water Tower Place Skyscraper is a large urban, mixed-use development comprising shopping mall and 74 story skyscraper.
General Info: I’m born and raised in Tucson, Arizona but currently live in Albuquerque, NM. I think my real interest in cities and buildings came from living in Atlanta, GA while getting my Master’s in Science in Electrical Engineering. I love buildings because they can have a special blend of engineering and art.
