Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a wildlife preserve near Sacramento, CA.

Time

It was taken at 9:41 a.m. on May 29, 2015.

Lighting

The lighting was natural from a late morning sun shining just right to highlight the Snowy Egret perched on a log.

Equipment

Since the trip was a spur of the moment I used my runaround equipment. This shot was caputred with the Canon Rebel T5i with a Canon EF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 IS USM lens.

Inspiration

I had some time to kill so figured a quick trip to the preserve would be nice. I was just about done and on the road out when I spotted this Snowy Egret hanging out by itself. I loved his position and the way the light was hitting it so I had to stop and try for the shot. I had just moments to get a few shots before it flew way.

Editing

This one has some contrast/shadows-highlights adjustments as well as a little bit of clarity.

In my camera bag

For my runaround bag (which is the one I used for this shot) I always have my Canon Rebel T5i with it's kit lens (an 18-55 STM) and the Canon EF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 IS USM. This bag is with me most of the time when I'm driving somewhere just in case a photo-op presents itself and has to be gotten. That was the case with this photo.

Feedback

My advice would be to always have some camera with you as you never know when you'll see something you have to get a photo of. I learned the hard way with a lot of missed opportunities because I didn't have a camera. Also, don't be afrait to try for that quick shot even if you think it won't come out. Sometimes you end up with one that'll be a favorite and/or one of your best shots. Take the time to look around as you're out and about as well. Most of the time we're focused on getting some place and don't take the time to see all the life happening around us.
