Location
I was fishing with my son on a beach near where he lives. The fishing was slow that morning so I picked up my camera and just started whiling away my time taking silhouette shots.Time
Sunrise and sunset are my favourite times to go both fishing and shooting photo's. The fish bite better in the change of light periods and the light makes for some fantastic colour combinations. How else could you combine your two best pastimes?Lighting
I was at first a little disappointed that there were no clouds about to add some more texture to the shot. After downloading and reviewing the image I changed my mind in favour of the gradual colour change on the horizon.Equipment
The camera was hand held. I love Fuji camera's for their in camera colour reproduction. The one I used for this shot was a three year old HS20EXR model which is still going strong.Inspiration
I saw the opportunity to take a few silhouette shots. Whilst shooting I decided that the fire we had lit to keep us warm would add another factor to the shot.Editing
I don't use much post processing in any of my photography. Sometimes a little contrast or a small addition of light or shadow but that's about it. My reasoning is that I wish to first become a better photographer before becoming a good post processor. This is just my personal view on the subject and I don't think less of anyone who uses it a lot.In my camera bag
I usually carry a tripod as well as the camera's. As well as the HS20EXR I also carry a Fuji XP200. This camera is waterproof and therefore not adversely affected by being next to the sea a lot or when it rains. Rain is good for fishing too! I also carry ND filters and a polarizing filter. Some graduated filters and a cable remote accompany some spare batteries and memory cards. That's about it!Feedback
A lot of sunrises and sunsets are a must. Often I'll return home with basically nothing I'm proud of but put this down as a learning curve. Every now and then the day starts or finishes better than I'd wished for and the rewards come. Persistence pays!
