Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in Iceland, April 2015, after a full day of glacier climbing.

Time

This as late afternoon. It had been a mix of sunshine and sudden snowstorms. The clouds had cleared up for a bit.

Lighting

There is no special lighting. The sky was a mix of sun and clouds from snowstorms. The blue color on the water is the reflection of the Iceland sky.

Equipment

Hasselblad 500C, Zeiss Planar lens, 80mm

Inspiration

I find tourists with their Iphones and android cameras rather annoying. Everybody was taking the traditional photo of Skogafoss from top to bottom. However, I chose to do shot from this angle, because the falling water was beautiful, and the blue sky was reflecting off the water. I wanted the focal point to be the stone in the center, with a backdrop of waterfalls.

Editing

I was starting to have a bit of trouble with light leaks, so I used Paintshop Pro to crop the light leaks out of the edges.

In my camera bag

Hasselblad 500C, Nikon FE, Nikon FG, zoom lenses, wide angle lenses, close-up filters and lots of film :)

Feedback

Get wet! Get into the dirt, the snow, the mud! I stood in the middle of the freezing river to get this shot, with wet boots and wet ankles. If you stand straight up on the sidewalk, you'll never capture interesting. Crawl into caves, try that unexpected angle, play with layers and depth of field. Lose the constant photoshopping of your photos. A heavily edited and processed photo looks unnatural. The photos on my page have minimal to no processing. Processing for me is cropping the white edges from the negative scan, and pixeling out dust that I couldn't get off the negative scanner.
