This was a spur-of-the-moment shot that tickled me as soon as I saw this little chap. It was taken at Kirstenbosch Gardens in my home town Cape Town, South Africa and to my surprise, won the inaugural Kirstenbosch Photographic Competition in 2013.Time
This pond is at the very entrance to the gardens and although it can gets very busy not many people stop to see whats going on in it. I normally get there on my regular visits at around 8:30 in the morning before the rush.Lighting
As a rank amateur I make do with natures own lighting, I rarely use a flash never-mind cumbersome equipment.Equipment
Canon SX40 Bridge camera, not regarded very highly among the more elite circles of photographers but under the right conditions I've been able to achieve some decent resultsInspiration
I use Kirstenbosch Gardens as a way of de-stressing, getting some fresh air and perspective. My camera is always with me on these outings and there is such a variety of flora and fauna to inspire me to capture their beauty and personality. "Helmut the Frog" was the very first on that day.Editing
I do use Photoshop for cropping and tweakingIn my camera bag
I've since upgraded to a Canon SX50 Bridge camera and that's it.Feedback
This shot is not unusual but it is has that certain something that attracts attention and illicits very positive responses. I got the shot with a very simple camera and it could have been taken with a mobile phone or an instamatic. Being at the right place at the right time and recognising the potential wins everytime.
