Behind The Lens

Location

Shot was taken at Boxgrove Priory in the West Sussex village of Boxgrove, England. This is the ruined 12th century guest house at the Priory Church of St Mary and St Blaise.

Time

4.30 pm in the afternoon of the 4th November 2013 on a typical autumnal English day.

Lighting

Bright and low sunshine in a cloud peppered sky, so the shadows were long and the old flint walls textures more pronounced.

Equipment

Sony A850 Full Frame DSLR Sony 20mm F2.8 SAL

Inspiration

It was my first trip out to this particular location but I chose a day where I knew the light would be favourable for capturing this old ruin. I took a series of images early afternoon, but went back later when the sun and clouds made it all the more atmospheric and brought out all the wonderful shapes and textures.

Editing

Very little - no filters were used. Using Photoshop Elements 11, image was imported from the RAW file straightened and cropped as the wide angle lens had distorted the edges slightly. Added a little more warmth to the colours and lightened the shadows a little too. Sharpened by 0.5 px then saved as a JPEG file for the purposes of posting on the internet.

In my camera bag

Feedback

I always plan my photography trips by assessing the weather conditions forecast for the locality and also when the light is going to be, hopefully the most advantageous. I tend to rattle off as many shots as possible and at locations like this try to exclude modern human elements that would distract from the impact of the ruin, its timeless quality and natural beauty.
