Taken in the full glow of a sinking sun, this Yorkshire icon, a XIII century Benedictine Abbey in ruins..The English King Henry VIII, in a fit of rage declared the church of Rome an illegal entity and summoned the Benedictine monks to leave the abbey in the year 1540 and return to Italy..The Abbey was plundered soon after by numerous wealthy landlords who removed the lead roofs and much of the beautiful stonework for their own projects..It fell into disrepair and was left neglected for hundreds of years, The German navy almost destroyed it in 1914 when a salvo of shells hit the structures, sending tonnes of masonry to the ground..Eventually, the Abbey was returned to the crown and has been under the careful guardianship of English Heritage for many decades.
