Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my kitchen sink. I had read about taking this type of shot and was interested enough to give it a go. I'm self taught, reading, and watching youtube tutorials on things I want to try, and when I realised this could be done at home, with no special equipment, I tried it. This picture is taken on an old bridge camera.

Time

Back in Feb 2013. After reading how to get the shot, I tried it. Setting up at about 8pm once the kids were in bed, this was taken at approx 9.20pm.

Lighting

Nothing really. I haven't used any off camera flash yet. This photo was taken on an old bridge camera with a pop up flash. I just had to be careful not to shade the bottom half of the frame with the lens barrel.

Equipment

It was shot on an old Nikon P90 bridge camera, using a tripod.

Inspiration

I'd seen lots of "splash pics" and had wondered how it was done. After reading an article in a magazine, giving a step by step how to, I decided to give it a go.

Editing

The only thing this image has is a slight crop, straighten, and sharpen in lightroom.

In my camera bag

I find it impossible to travel light, and normally carry everything I own on a shoot. Currently my bag contains, Nikon D7100, 55-300 tele, 65 macro, 50 pancake, 10.5 fisheye, (all Nikon) and a Samyang 16mm f/2 along with various filters, remote shutter release, wired shutter release, Slik stick tripod, torches (including a LED Lensor 7.2) and lots of spare batteries.

Feedback

Once you're set up, and have your drip running, poke a pencil tip into the drip and focus on it. Lock your focus and click away. After a few minutes you'll get used to the timing of the splash. Have fun trying different backgrounds. The background in my picture, was about nine beer cans. I also found that I had to stack them upside down, in order for the reflection to be the right way up. If you're using a pop up flash, be careful not to shade the foreground with your lens barrel, and if it's too harsh, wrap a bit of tissue over it, securing it with a rubber band. Finally, if you don't have a mains lead, make sure your battery is full, and have fun. Don't forget to post your results to Viewbug. :-)
