Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken over the July 4th weekend 2015 in East Hampton NY at Wyborg Beach. I had a great time shooting my son and his cousins in the water, i captured at least 500 images that day, some of them came out like this one. Its some of my best work to date.

Time

It was taken in midday, before lunch. the surf was big that day, and the water was quite cold, hence the shorty wetsuits!

Lighting

I used natural sunlight, it was a cloudless spectacular Hampton's day..

Equipment

My camera is a Canon 70D, and the lens used here was the newer Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM. I used a tripod for balance as this is a hefty piece of glass, no flash on this outing..

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the fun that my son and his cousins were having, they all truly love being in the water, and the waves were just fantastic on that day. The tubes were huge and the faces offered the boys some really nice rides. You can easily see the joy in his face in this shot. Since there's no way for them to pose for these shots, its all candid expression and pure action and happiness. It was a great test of my gear as well, they get moving really fast in these waves and tracking them through the tube can be a challenge, but the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is more than up to the task and the frame rate of my 70D in RAW was good enough to yield some terrific results.

Editing

I did some minor Post on these shots for cropping and a little fine tuning of exposure and saturation but that's about it, the lighting was perfect and the exposure's were almost spot on. I used Adobe Lightroom desktop for my Post Processing.

In my camera bag

I only have my 70D body, and my lens choices range from the kit 18-135, to the 50mm f 1.2L for portraits and the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is now my favorite goto lens for action. I often use Borrowlenses for my lens outfitting and to test out new gear before i buy.

Feedback

A good mono or tripod for keeping the camera steady with the big lens, and also making sure there isn't anything unsightly in the far background like container ships or other cargo carriers, as it gives you more flexibility in overall image size and cropping options. Also making sure your location and time of day is going to have the sun in the right spot, sometimes beaches can put you at odds with the way the sun faces at a given time of day making things a little more challenging.
