Location
This chapel can be found in the eerie ghost town of Bodie in the Eastern Sierras of California.Time
The image was captured around 7:00 in the morning. Although it was mid-May the weather was very chilly and the air was nippy. The sun wove in and out between the clouds, but it made no difference in the temperature: it was cold!Lighting
It is all about chasing the light! In this photo you would have thought the sun had hid its rays, but in reality the sun was shining through the clouds. When I turned the image to black and white the clouds really popped and the contrast between the light and dark helped me capture the dramatic cloud display.Equipment
Canon 7D MarkII, lens 24-105mm 4.0, and MeFoto tripod.Inspiration
It is hard to go to a place like Bodie and not be inspired by the entire atmosphere. It is truly a place that is stuck in time. The houses have plates on the tables and food on the stove. The teacher left her hat on her desk as she fled the town, which quickly became engulfed in flames. Bodie is simply a treasure trove of lost memories ready to be captured by a thoughtful click of a camera.Editing
I used some cloning and healing in photoshop. Using NIK Silver Efex2 I changed the photo to black and white and Viveza2 was used on the sky.In my camera bag
I love everything that I have, but it does not all fit in my backpack, so I have to plan ahead when packing it. For landscapes my Canon 5D Mark II with my 16-35 mm 2.8 is an absolute must. I also use my handy dandy MeFoto travel tripod. For action pack shots my Canon 7D MarkII with my 24-105mm 4.0 lens does the job. My bag would not be complete without my Canon 70-200mm 4.0 lens. I also have a Canon 580EXII flash, Canon 28mm 1.0 prime lens, timer remote control, hoodloupe, various size filters, headlamp, flash light and an array of batteries and san disc. Sounds like a lot, right?Feedback
The advice that I want to share with other photographers is to have an open mind and let your creative side take you to that place of wonderment. This is where you will find the beauty in the image you are about to create. Stay true to yourself and your style, strive to improve, venture out of your comfort zone and take risk.
