Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the end of Carmel River Beach in Carmel California. This house is a popular house along the Scenic loop in Carmel.

Time

It was just at sunset. I was out shooting the sunset over the bay and waiting to do some night shots, I turned around to head to another vantage point and the house was reflecting the sunset beautifully. Hands down this was my favorite shot from that night.

Lighting

I dont think the lighting could have been any better. The house was tucked away so the light just made it pop against the background.

Equipment

I shot this with my Canon EOS Rebel t4i on a Polaroid tripod and my stock 18-55mm Canon lense. I dont have the fanciest equipment but good lighting and composition can never go wrong.

Inspiration

I turned around after shooting the sunset for a few minutes and the house just sort of jumped out at me. I loved how the architecture flowed into the coastline and how the light reflected from the windows. I felt it truly summed up the ideal home for this little corner of the world.

Editing

Not too much retouch was required for this one. I did a little noise reduction and pulled the contrast up to make the house feel more prominent.

In my camera bag

I am still starting out as a photographer so my equipment is not too fancy. On night runs I always bring my Polaroid tripod, and my t4i. I only have the two lenses. My 18-55mm and the 75-300 zoom. Both fairly cheap starter lenses. I have a wide angle lens attachment by Bower which is a .42x46mm that just threads onto the front of the 18-55. In the bag, I have a whole host of goodies. Extra battery packs, steel wool, a lighter, a macro flash ring, two flashlights, my no name brand remote trigger, a handful of memory cards, and cleaning supplies.

Feedback

In my experience, go with your gut. If you see a shot and think its going to look better standing two feet out into the ocean that it will from up on top of the rock face, go stand in the ocean. Carefully please. I tried a few angles out when shooting this but ultimately I jumped across a few rocks and set my tripod up in a spot someone would not have otherwise walked to. Also, if someone sees you taking pictures of the house and says something to you, it is only polite to introduce yourself and explain you are not a peeping Tom. As for technical advice it comes down to how you like to shoot. For me, I frame my shots with a range of exposures so I don't walk away disappointed. Scouting before the shoot, especially for night photography is always a good idea. Knowing the terrain especially in limited light situations can save you from a really bad experience. I stumbled upon this shot by chance, but I had scouted the area a day before to figure out where to be set to see the sunset. So I will leave you with my last bit of advice. Stay vigilant. Even if you are there for one particular capture, keep your eyes open for other great opportunities.
