Behind The Lens

Location

We have chipmunks and squirrels that we feed on black oil sunflower seeds on the deck beside our house in rural Vermont. I built a large flower stand accent, and the wild fur babies hop up to claim their bounty. This grey squirrel sat in the open for some time, until the seeds were gone.

Time

This was taken in the evening in March, the sun had just gone down behind the ridge to the camera's right, giving soft, even light.

Lighting

If you pixel peep his eye, you can see our house reflected.

Equipment

I put my super zoom Canon SX-30 on a tripod, just to get as sharp an image as possible . The lawn background came out very smooth.

Inspiration

This is the best part of owning a super zoom, a safari right on your deck! The subject was completely at ease, and I got this close en camera.

Editing

No, maybe slight sharpening and contrast.

In my camera bag

The super zoom and a Canon Rebel T5 with the 70-300 Sigma. I have a 50mm Canon for portraits/ landscapes and a kit lens.

Feedback

Wait for the light, use good seed, let the animals get used to you. Chipmunks eat out of my wife's hand . Another useful feature of the super zoom is that you can turn off the shutter "sound" to not spook wildlife.
