Location
i shot this photo at machu picchu, the incan city that remained hidden until the 1930's. a friend and i were passengers on a cruise to some s. american destinations, and also a side trip of 3 days to fly to cusco peru, spend the night and then take 3 forms of transportation to arrive at the inca city. we rode in a car, took a train and finally a bus. it took 6 hours to arrive at this magnificant display of inca construction. the city was built near 1460AD and was abandoned 100 years later. the spaniards never discovered the city during their years of conquest.Time
we arrived at one p.m. on a cloudy and partially rainy day which is typical weather at the historical site. the city stands at approximately 7-8 thousand feet above sea level. the weather also includes various wind speeds. we spent 2-3 hours(not nearly enough time) to "soak" in the magnitude of this world heritage site.Lighting
i just kept shooting pictures on manual until i was happy with the direction, the lighting(that changed so frequently) and the clarity.Equipment
i used a canon iso rebel xs camera that was hand-held during the whole time that i shot photos. i also used a long range lense (80-300mm) for this particular shot.Inspiration
to view the whole city one must walk through a covered walkway and then it opens up to display the entire city. i gasped and my travel companion cried as we stood almost "shell" shocked with visual magnificence. having listened to a lecture on the city only increased our amasement with its mortarless stone structures and the extensive terrace garden agriculture. the short-lived inca civilization was extremely sophisticated.Editing
i only sharpened the colors and the pixels of the photo. In my camera bag
i usually carry a small photo bag that i can fit my camera attached to an 18-80 lense, a 80-300 mm lense, a battery charger, a cleaning cloth, a fine brush, an extra battery and an extra card and a pen and paper.Feedback
as previously stated, the weather in peru at that height is extremely unpredictible. be prepared with a raincoat and hat and a means to keep your camera dry. also you might need to change your iso on your camera from time to time to accomodate the lighting. it's a very physical trip and i would not recommend it for persons who have physical disabilities. we encountered a rock slide and had to walk up part of the side of the mountain before we arrived at machu picchu.
