The photo was taken at the Rialto Bridge in Venice in February 15. The city had always been on my bucket list and so for my big birthday my partner and I went there for three days. I am an amateur photographer and started DSLR photography a couple of years ago.Time
It was nearly 4pm in the afternoon and the sun was getting low. We had only arrived at lunch time and the weather forecast for the next two days wasn't good. I wanted to make to make the most out of it and remembered us rushing to the Rialto Bridge, which is such a picturesque spot. There wasn't much time left and the shadows were already getting longer.Lighting
The late afternoon sun gave the colours of the houses some vibrancy, which served as a great backdrop against the silhouettes of the gondoliers.. As the bridge is such a famous spot there were countless gondolas and I took a lot of exposures. I didn't want to recreate any of the picture postcard shots. One of the reasons I love this photo so much is that it actually was one of my first shots where I consciously worked with light - so it is kind of a milestone in my development as photographer. In preparation for the trip I had done an online class on travel photography and two things stuck with me 'choosing a moment' and 'working with light'.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 1100D with a 18-135mm lens and a polarizing filter.Inspiration
As mentioned earlier I felt I had to take my photography to a new level and experiment more with light. This sounds so simple, yet it has taken me on such an exciting journey and I feel how training my eye and practice is so important. I admire nature photographers who get out in the middle of the night to capture that stunning perfect sunrise - honestly, at times I think I am just to lazy for that. But hopefully that bug will bite my once the time is right!Editing
Just a bit of auto colour adjust; nothing more.In my camera bag
At the moment I only have a 18-135mm lens, which is great for being out and about as it allows me close ups as well as wide-angle shots. Most of the time I am using a polarizer filter as the colour quality is so much better (when the light is right that is). Next on my wishlist is a faster lens which is more geared up towards portraiture, maybe a 24-70mm or 85mm.Feedback
Be true to your own journey as photographer. It is influenced by so many aspects, for example time and budget. Take the next step that is right for YOU. It might seem small, but it will lead you on, and on, and on. Sometimes you might meet inspirational people, at other times you need to get to grips with a setting on your camera you don't understand. No insight is too small. Practice. And take creative breaks when you feel you need them.
