Location
This photo was taken in the amazing city of Philadelphia. After spending 8 months backpacking through Mexico and Central America, my Mum flew from Australia to meet me in the States for the last part of my trip. I was exhausted, worn down and most definitely over hostel living. Staying in a nice hotel in the heart of such an amazing city totally re-energised me.Time
This was taken on a grey and rainy afternoon probably sometime between 2pm and 4pm.Lighting
Lighting didn't even come into it! This was such a spontaneous shot that after one click of the camera the moment was gone. I had to fully rely on mother nature for lighting.Equipment
I shot this on my Canon 450D with the 55-250mm zoom lens.Inspiration
Strangely enough, I was inspired to take this photo out of sheer boredom! It was a cold and rainy day in Philly and I was stuck in the hotel room until the weather had cleared a bit. I was on the balcony taking photo's of the buildings and city when I looked down and saw this person crossing the road. I don't even know what this person looked like, whether they were male, female, young, old as I never actually saw them. They were totally hidden under their umbrella. But the stripes on the road crossings and the shapes on the umbrella just struck me.Editing
The only post processing I did was add a black and white filter. This enhanced the geometrical shapes and patterns and intensified the effects of a cold and rainy day.In my camera bag
My equipment is really basic. I have my Canon 450D with the standard kit lens and a 55-250mm zoom lens. Then I have my Canon D10 waterproof camera. As a travel photographer I often find myself in slightly more extreme situations and my D10 takes whatever I throw at it where as my DSLR is way more sensitive! And then of course I have my trusty iPhone. Although I don't really use it, it's always good for a back up or a quick grab to capture an unexpected shot.Feedback
Im often asked if this photo was a staged shoot but it was totally spontaneous. And thats pretty much how most of my photography happens. Roam the streets even if they are familiar to you, and watch whats happening in your surroundings. Look for the extraordinary in the ordinary. When Im travelling I quite often walk the same streets over and over again and always come back with completely different photo's than the day before. Lighting changes, weather changes, people change. There's always something new to see and capture. Spontaneity is literally the basis of my whole photography career!
