Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my parent's backyard last year. They have both worked so hard on creating a beautiful little oasis right out the back door and I love walking through it and taking photos, I love to find inspiration in the little things in life.

Time

I took this photo in the mid-afternoon, it was nice and shady as there are a ton of trees surrounding the property.

Lighting

I shoot mostly with natural light and this one is no exception. I really love how contrasting it is with the black background and white flower.

Equipment

I shot this on my Canon 6D and my nifty fifty, 50mm 1.8. Such a great little lens for the price, I primarily shoot with it.

Inspiration

I was just going on a little walk through of my parent's yard with my camera in hand and snapping photos of all the flowers that they have growing back there.

Editing

I do post-processing in Lightroom and in this image I converted it to B&W and upped the contrast a lot. I also brought up the whites and highlights and took the shadows and blacks down. I then went through with a brush adjustment to get rid of the background and make it all black so the flower itself stood out as the focus.

In my camera bag

My kit is extremely small at the moment and all I have is my Canon 6D and the Canon 50mm 1.8. It really makes me move around a lot and I've fallen in love with prime lenses, definitely going to keep that theme going as I continue to grow my kit. I have my eye on the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art and will hopefully be getting that really soon.

Feedback

There's beauty all around us in this great big world. Sometimes you just need to slow down and appreciate the little things. Always have your camera in hand as you never know when you'll see something you want to capture. Shady spots are great for capturing shots during mid-day so you don't have any harsh shadows.
