Behind The Lens

Location

This photo peered out to me on a plot I used to live on in an area called Midrand in South Africa. The helper was picking some vegetables in the garden patch and her daughter was playing around. There is a gate leading in and out to the area and she went over there and started climbing up and down, in and out, completely on her own mission. I love that in people. So I clicked.

Time

If I remember correctly this photo was taken late afternoon. I had wanted to experiment with macro photography at the Golden hour.

Lighting

With the original colouring of the photo the little girl (Crystal) was wearing a pink top. I'm not the biggest fan of the colour so that already was reason enough for me to change the tones. I wanted most of the emphasis to be placed on her eyes so the sepia tones helped bring that about, giving her a clear, somewhat mischievious, albeit still innocent look.

Equipment

This was shot freehand with a Nikon D3200...or it could have been a Canon...it was quite a while ago so the technical details elude me.

Inspiration

I've always had an interest in people in their natural element, doing what they enjoy as well as the antics of children...pure and full of truth...both elements in one with this photo...that and 'they eyes being the window to the soul'...peoples' souls are intriguing...what more could I ask for?

Editing

Simple Lightroom tweaks here and there and the tone change from colour to sepia with added contrast. I try not to deviate from my original image with too much post prod. I've always believed one takes a photo at the time for a reason - usually being that they admired the way the light hung off their subject, or the specified angle of their subject at the time...things like that...so when it comes to post prod I try to enhance those characteristics as much as I can by making use of post production as minimally as possible.

In my camera bag

I've been privileged enough to have got a few decent gigs in the past few years that have in turn helped provide new gear and upgrades, so I currently shoot with a Canon 70D, Canon 700D, 50mm f1.8 and 18-135mm with a few accessories here and there.

Feedback

Golden Hour can make your camera your best friend. Go out early in the morning or late afternoon and experiment with the natural tones the world has to offer you. I mostly work freehand but a tripod every now and then to help stabilise fast-moving shots is always a help. That and just follow your own sense of direction - there is no 'right' or 'wrong' photograph.
