Location
This photo was taken on the Greek island of Rhodes. It is a monastery called Fileirmos. I was surprised to find that there was no one around. It was a beautiful day and I spend quite a few hours up in the hills above the city of Rhodes.Time
This was taken in the early afternoon. We had a four day weekend to spend on the island. We had a conference to attend that begun on Tuesday in Thessaloniki so we flew to Rhodes to spend a long weekend.Lighting
As I stated it was mid-day and the lighting could not have been worse. However, you have to do the best with what you have available.Equipment
All I had with me at the time was a point and shoot. It was an Olympus that my wife bought for my birthday. This was taken in 2003 and before we had the great in-phone cameras that we have to day.Inspiration
While living in Europe the many entry doors I saw were very compelling. What attracted me to this one was the various shades within the door itself.Editing
The jpeg out of the camera is very flat without contrast. To begin I used Photomatix and applied a preset that I have made for other photos. It is like a "painterly" preset and I thought it did a great job of highlighting the rough faces and lines in the stone. I could see that it would really stand out as a black and white image. I used Nik plug-ins to convert to b&w. I have a preset that started as "Wet Rocks" that comes with the software and changed it to fit some of the other photos I have. The selective coloring I did as an afterthought and I thought it really gave this pic some punch. Selective coloring is not something I do often. In my camera bag
I have Nikon cameras, a D2x and a D7100 that I use all of the time. I have 4 lenses that I use all Sigmas. I have a 24mm 1.4, 50mm 1.4, a 17-50mm 2.8 and finally a 28-70mm 2.8.Feedback
I think the most important thing to point out here is that it does not take high end equipment to get compelling shots. This is one of my favorite and is displayed in two places in my home. It appears that others like it as well because I have sold quite a few.
