Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in an open field that fronted a wooded area that was located behind a community center pool in Midway, Georgia. After some heavy spring rainfall, the open fields around our town had exploded with these yellow wildflowers. It wasn't an ideal spot to get to as I had to drive off the main road. Some sort of water line leading from the pool was leaking and it was really muddy to get into the area and I almost got my car stuck. We had to walk a good distance before we got to this spot.

Time

This picture was taken mid-afternoon. This was at the end of a mini-shoot that had gone too long and this was the last location and outfit change my daughter was willing to endure. This shot is one of the last shots I took that day.

Lighting

I love using natural light. It had been a bright and sunny afternoon but by the time we got to this location it became overcast so the sun was not direct. There was a little sun peeking through so I took a chance and went without a flash.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D5200 with a Nikkor 55-300mm lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

My daughter is a beautiful and very photogenic little girl and I was looking for a few promotional shots to include on my website and social media. I had noticed the this area several weeks earlier and wanted to use these flowers as a backdrop before the city came and mowed the field. I had some time on a Saturday afternoon so I grabbed some random outfits of my daughters and threw her in the car and hit a few different spots around town. I wasn't going to take this particular outfit but my daughter insisted it was her favorite. It ended up working perfectly since it was such a sharp contrast to the yellow flowers.

Editing

I did some minor cropping and simple retouching in Lightroom at first. My daughters hair was actually a mess with the humidity and I went back in later and touched up around her hairline to remove all the fly-aways.

In my camera bag

I carry my Nikon D7200 with 35-55mm and 55-300 NIkkor lenses. I also carry an external flash, UV and Polarizing lens, extra SD cards, camera cleaning kit, and have my tripod strapped to the side.

Feedback

I did not pose my daughter for this shot. I let her wander in the field while I stood back a distance. Every once in a while I would give some direction but basically let her be. As I was making some adjustments to my camera, she stopped to wait and ended up in the awkward but cute stance she was in. As I got my camera ready to shoot she threw one arm up and was bringing it down the side of her face. I shouted "LOOK AT ME! SMILE!" and managed to capture this shot. It was totally random and I probably couldn't capture it again and have it look as natural as it does here. I think she was relaxed and didn't realize I was shooting at the time until I called out to her but managed to catch this before she really was paying attention. I think I take the best shots of people when they do not realize they are being photographed. There are no walls up, they are just themselves in that moment.
