Location
I took this photo on the rock shelf behind an ocean pool near my home at Bellambi on the NSW coast of Australia.Time
I got up early with this location in mind as I knew the waves were going to be big. I started shooting about 5.00 am and continued through to about 7.00 am.Lighting
There had been lots of storms and heavy rain for days. This morning was no different with the sky being fully cloudy. This suited me perfectly as the clouds diffused the light and I could shoot after sunup.Equipment
I used a Canon 6D with a Canon 70-200 at the short end mounted on a Manfrotto tripod and ball head.Inspiration
I've always loved the ocean and it features in most of my photos. I've always wanted to portray a powerful scene and on this particular day I was rewarded.Editing
As always I catalogued in Lightroom the processed in Photoshop with the Silver Efex plugin. In my camera bag
My kit is fairly modest. I have a 6D body a Canon 24-70 f2.8ii & Canon 70-200 f2.8ii. 2 Manfrotto tripods, 1 light weight and 1 heavy. A10 stop ND and a 6 stop ND grad, and a remote release.Feedback
For me there 3 elements that were required to make this shot. First, bad weather, some sizable waves are what this shot is about. Secondly, location. You need somewhere for the waves to crash hard a spray high into the air. Lastly, shutter speed. It needs to be fast enough to catch the wave at its highest but not so fast that there is no sense of movement.
